Margins Imprint의 대표 작품인 Moon Calendar를

처음 접했을때의 그 예술성, 기능성, 거기에 더해

친환경적인 제작과정에

(달의 모양이 정말 정확했던 것은 물론!)

감탄했었던 기억이 생생합니다. 

천문학을 주제로 특유의 아름다운 작품을 만들어내는

Margins Imprint의 아티스트 Jeremy Rendina씨의

캘리포니아 오하이(Ojai)에 위치한 스튜디오를 방문했습니다. 

우리에게 영감을 주는 ‘사람들’의 이야기를 담아내는

인터뷰 시리즈의 첫번째 이야기입니다.

Since we started LOOP,

there have been several pieces that

we've consistently featured.

Behind these pieces are individuals who

contemplate ideas, design, and bring them to life.

One of our favorites is

the Moon Calendar from Margins Imprint.

I remember being impressed by its artistic quality,

functionality and eco-friendly production process

(not to mention how accurately

it depicted the phases of the moon!).

We visited with Jeremy Rendina,

the artist behind Margins Imprint,

at his studio located in Ojai, California,

where he creates unique and beautiful artworks

centered around astronomy themes.

This is the first story in our interview series

capturing the stories of people who inspire us.

작품의 중심 주제로 특별히 달의 움직임을 추적하는,

천문학을 선택한 영감을 어디서 얻으셨나요? 

저는 행성들이 어떻게 작동하고 시간이 어떻게 측정되는지에

관한 초기의 과학적 그림을 좋아합니다.

천체의 이러한 표현과 당시 학자들 및 과학자들이 이 현상을

해석한 방법에서 영감을 얻었습니다.

특별히 "원시적"으로 표현된 우주의 진화하는 이해 속에서

시(Poetry)를 발견할 수 있습니다.

한 해 동안의 달의 일상적인 단계를

하나의 시각으로 표현하는 것은 흥미로운 디자인 과제였습니다.

What inspired you to choose 

astronomy as the central  theme in your artwork?

I was drawn to early scientific drawings of

how the planets work and how time was measured.

I find inspiration in these representations

of the heavens and how scholars and scientists

of the day interpreted this phenomena. 

There's poetry in the evolving

understanding of our universe,

especially in the"primitive" representations.

And capturing the daily phases of the moon

for an entire year - in one visual was

an interesting design challenge.

저는 항상 질감에 매료되어 왔습니다. 

고고학 서적 수집가로서,

여러 해 동안 다양한 종류의 인쇄물과 방식을 접해왔습니다.

여러 형태의 인쇄 방식에서

잉크를 직접 느낄 수 있는 것을 좋아합니다.

You use some unorthodox printmaking techniques.

Can you share with our readers

how you discovered them

and why you decided to specialize 

in these techniques for creating your work?

I've always been drawn to texture.

And as a collector of antique books,

I’ve come across various types of printing

over the years.

I love that you can feel the ink

in many forms of printmaking.

Margins Imprint는 공정 무역 제품, 리사이클 종이,

소이(콩) 잉크 등의 지속 가능한 인쇄 방식을 강조합니다.

왜 이러한 선택을 작품에 반영하는 것이 중요했나요?

불필요한 폐기물을 더 이상 만들지 않고 지구에 해로운 화학 물질을

사용하지 않는 것은 필수이고 매우 중요하다고 생각합니다.

현재 마켓에는 재활용 재료로 만들어진 종이가 많이 있으며,

더 많은 나무를 베어낼 필요가 없습니다.

Margins Imprint emphasizes

sustainable printing practices including

the use of Fair Trade,

tree-free papers, and soy-based ink.

Why was it important for you

to make these choices in your artwork?  

I think it's very important to avoid creating

unnecessary waste and not use harsh chemicals

that can be bad for the planet.

There is plenty of paper that can be made

with recycled materials and there is no need to

cut down more trees.

During our visit to your studio, we noticed

the meticulous detail of your work first hand.

What are the specific challenges of

your printmaking technique?

Registration between plates and

screens must be very precise.

Fortunately we work with great technicians

to help with this.

When everything lines up it's very satisfying!

아름다운 자연, 그리고 그 자연과 사람들과의 연결을 느낄 수 있는

곳으로 알고 있습니다.

오하이(Ojai)의 환경이 천문학을 주제로 한 작품에

어떻게 영감을 준다고 생각하세요?

특별히 오하이 (Ojai)는 이 타운이 자리하고 있는

특징적이고 고유한 계곡으로 인해

큰 도시에서의 빛 오염을 막아주고 있습니다.

이 곳에 처음 이사했을 때,

밤에 집으로 돌아가는 길에 차를 세워 하늘을 올려다 봤어요.

그날 밤의 별들은 지금껏 제가 보았던

그 어느 별들보다도 밝았던 기억이 납니다.

Ojai, California, is known for its beautiful nature

and the feeling of connection between

people and nature.

How does the local environment inspire your

astronomy-themed pieces?

Due to the uniquely situated valley that Ojai sits in,

the surrounding mountains block out

the light pollution from larger cities.

When I first moved to Ojai, I remember pulling over

on my way home at night to look at the sky

as the stars were brighter than I had ever seen.

마지막으로 앞으로의 진행될 기대되는 프로젝트,

또는 작품의 새로운 주제나 방향성등의 계획에 대해 알고 싶습니다.

현재 몇년 동안 태양 시계를 제작해오고 있습니다.

또 한 가지 프로젝트는 스님들이 시력을 개선하는 데에 사용했던

티베트 눈 차트(a Tibetan Eye Chart)를 인쇄하고 있습니다.

Margins는 기능적인 예술과 사물에 중점을 두며

천체 주제를 계속 탐구할 것입니다.

Looking ahead, are there any upcoming projects

that you are particularly excited about,

or any new themes or directions

you plan to explore with your artwork?

I've been working on a Sun Dial for years now

and we are also printing a Tibetan Eye Chart that

monks used to help improve their eyesight.

Margins will continue to explore celestial themes

with an emphasis on functional art and objects.
